It is not my schtick, but it is my guilty pleasure.</p><p></p><p>I will talk about SUPER slow breathing. But before we start I feel a need to give a disclaimer of what any breathwork or emotional regulation technique for me is and isn&#8217;t.</p><p></p><p>Breathwork is NOT the ultimate silver bullet for hardships that the life presents to us. We are imperfect and often unhappy, by design. Systems and structures we live in can be harmful, often by design. None of that we can just breathe away using the right breathwork technique. </p><p></p><p>Having said that, I love playing with the breath, as a tool for emotional regulation but also, maybe more importantly, as a way to experiment and play with the body that I have been given.</p><p></p><p>OK, so will you do this for me now? (Seriously, go on, do it.)</p><p>Count how many breaths you do in one minute, using a stop watch on your phone or your watch. What counts as one breath is one inhale and one exhale.</p><p>Just your normal pace of breathing, at this point we are not trying to change it in any way.</p><p></p><p>Done, yeah? It&#8217;s weird isn&#8217;t it, to start intentionally noticing something that goes under the radar most of the time - our own process of breathing. I don&#8217;t know about you, but it always gives me this weird feeling of how little happens under conscious control in every given moment, and how much has to happen in any given moment for the body to function without me even knowing it is ongoing. It is mind bending.</p><p></p><p>How many did you count? I just did it myself, it was 22 breaths in one minute. That is fairly high, that is some fast breathing given the fact that I am sitting and not exerting myself physically. 22 is a bit high - I think 15 or 16 would be average. </p><p></p><p>Now, relax on your seat, and focus on your abdomen. Is it relaxed? Can you feel your abdominal walls expanding as you breathe in and falling back as you breath out? Focus on that area of the body for a minute or two. </p><p></p><p>If that is OK now, imagine that you have a candle in front of you. And that you want to blow at that candle very, very gently. You want to be flickering that little flame without putting it out. Maybe make a little seashell sound at the moment of your exhale and make it very very long. Close your eyes. Do this 5 times. Very slowly. Take your time. </p><p></p><p>OK. How do you feel? </p><p></p><p>Now let&#8217;s go back to the first practice, just following the breath, as it is and counting how many breaths in one minute.</p><p></p><p>So? How many is it? I actually just went from 22 to 3. I only had three breaths in a minute now. Really, I just did it as I was writing this.</p><p></p><p>If your breath count is now around 6 breaths per minute, welcome to the <strong>slow breathing</strong> zone. The frequency here is 0.1 Hz.</p><p></p><p>If you have slowed down even more, and reached the one, two or three breaths per minute you have entered the territory of <strong>super slow breathing</strong>. Specific types of intentional breathwork can both lead to parasympathetic and sympathetic activation and dominance. It also can depend on our history and relationship with the body and the process of breathing itself. The breathing frequency here is 0.1 Hz.</p><p></p><p>There is an extensive body of research pointing to the physical and mental benefits of slow breathing practices. Mystique?</h2><p>I can rant. And I can tell you what is not neuroscience. But can I tell you what IS neuroscience? And can I tell you what DOES work? </p><p>The aim of this piece is to provide just that.</p><p>The nervous system. It&#8217;s <em>le mot</em> <em>du jour</em>, isn&#8217;t it? There is so much content about it. How much of is just treading water, it&#8217;s hard for me to say&#8230; But it seems like we have entered the age where everything somehow leads to how well our nervous system regulates (the &#8216;regulated&#8217; nervous system is becoming a status symbol). In short, we are in the age of <em>nervous system mystique.</em></p><p>For starters, when influencers and therapy writers or educators refer to &#8220;the nervous system&#8221;, what they really mean, I am guessing, is the autonomic nervous system (ANS), although it is not always entirely clear whether they understand this distinction themselves. But this distinction is important. In fact, saying that something is about &#8220;nervous system&#8221; is a truism, because literally everything is. The nervous system encompasses the brain, the spinal cord and the autonomic nervous system.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png" width="512" height="602" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:602,&quot;width&quot;:512,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:148600,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://neuroscienceandpsy.substack.com/i/178171019?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LnzS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F042ed206-beed-4369-963d-4e4115b6aa0b_512x602.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Nervous system: CNS + ANS (central nervous system and autonomic nervous system). Seems like a contradiction in terms? Not at all. </p><p>Working with ANS does not lend itself to all presentations. Nor is it a cure-all. I don&#8217;t buy into the narrative of psychological safety being only determined by ANS patterns. Nor do I look for autonomic dysregulation in everything and everyone. It is hardly ever only one thing, when it comes to complex traits, feeling and behaviours (<em>the cure-all fallacy</em>). But ANS is part of the story and one we can learn to take it into account, in our therapy work. Sort of ANS literacy. Not that shabby, right?</p><p>To me, taking the ANS into account in therapy work is truly a treasure trove and my practice has been transformed by it, over time. There is a body of evidence to support this - I have shared some solid references in <a href="https://neuroscienceandpsy.substack.com/p/the-ans-therapy-nerd-autonomic-nervous">my previous post</a> and I will share some more here. </p><p>The aim of this piece is to provide some elements of practical application. </p><p>In this post I will NOT be revealing any simple hacks to reach the ANS Nirvana. What I will do however is:</p><ul><li><p>Give a succinct definition of what autonomic nervous system (ANS) is</p></li><li><p>The role of the vagus nerve role in the ANS: THE VERY BASICS</p></li><li><p>Explain that sympathetic activation is not &#8216;good&#8217; or &#8216;bad&#8217;, <em>per se</em></p></li><li><p>Discuss breathing as an access point to autonomic control (is autonomic nervous system really completely autonomous?)</p></li><li><p>Link between breathing and &#8216;cardioception&#8217;</p></li><li><p>Touch on relationship of mindful meditation practices and ANS regulation</p></li><li><p>Share LOTS of practical tips</p></li><li><p>Talk about measure of ANS activity such as HRV and GSR (and their usefulness in therapy)</p></li><li><p>Reiterate how no complex mental states, behaviours or attitudes to life can be reduced to the ANS explanations only</p><p></p><p>All of the above might or might not lead you to the ANS bliss.</p></li></ul>
